Community Caves

I just love roadside attractions, and when they’ve been there for thousands of years even better.  This unique natural feature is located in Spearfish Canyon and is just a short hike off the main road.

We are lucky, the Black Hills National Forest is our backyard.  Spearfish Canyon is just part of the over one million acres of public land.  Other points of interest located in the area you may have heard of include Devils Tower and Mount Rushmore.

Finding the caves can be a bit of a trick.  As you leave Spearfish SD, the parking area is 2.7 miles into the canyon.  Park, cross the road and look for the well worn path in the ditch.  It will take you across the dry creek bed to the ravine you will hike up.  You have to have a bit of “hiking intuition” to find it.  Read this Community Caves post for more directions.  This hike can be done by older kids, the trail is steep with loose gravel at the top – the trail remains very icy into the spring.  Use your judgement and don’t hike beyond your abilities.

The area is suited for family vacations.  There are plenty of camping and lodging options.  The popular old west town of Deadwood is located in the area.  Loads of museums and of course plenty of outdoor recreation options.

Here is a video I shot of the caves
