Largest Ball of Twine

We found the largest ball of twine in Kansas when were just cruising along the highway in rural Kansas.  Probably a little over half way back to our home in Deadwood South Dakota from the house we rented in Port Aransas Texas, when I almost drove by the World’s Largest Ball of Twine.

I made a quick u-turn and we were parked in front on the ball of twine.  According to Wikipedia, this is the world’s largest and heaviest ball of sisal twine.  1,475 miles long… wow.  That is is a lot of of me and the largest ball of twine in kansas

Frank Stoeber is the ball’s father.  By the time of his death in 1974 the ball had a diameter of 11-foot.  Every August the size of the ball is increased during the Twine-a-thon.  Some year we will have to trying and make it back to Cawker City for that.

This is another great piece of Americana.  One of those great roadside attractions that makes traveling the highway more fun than the interstate.  This is among my favorites, my other favorites include:  Carhenge, The Jolly Green Giant and the Corn Palace.  To me family travel includes visiting quirky places you won’t soon forget.
